The mustachioed soldier wears his military-issued jacket with a high, white collar. Cantonment was used as a base of operations from 1879 to 1882 for the US government to police the Southern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, as members of the Northern Cheyenne had escaped from the reservation in 1878 in an attempt to return home. Part of the 24th Infantry of Buffalo Soldiers were stationed there beginning in the autumn of 1888.
