Informed by natural history and linguistic, her multidisciplinary practice explores structures and processes of painting that spans across various mediums including painting, installation, prints, video and photography. Basing on the idea of painting as a medium occupying ‘two-and-a-half dimensions,’ the artist uses geometric shapes and monochromatic palette to create intricate patterns that evoke the visual sensibilities of optical art. In the present lot, the harsh edges of the precisely shaped canvas and the white-on-black layering create the illusion of a three-dimensional sculpture on the wall, capturing the artist’s constant interest in creating spatial possibilities on flat surfaces. Widely recognised as ‘one of the most promising artists from Singapore in the last decade,’ Chua is the winner of the 2020 IMPART award. Additionally, Chua has been honoured with multiple solo shows in Asia, most recently at STPI, Singapore (2020) which marks the artist’s largest solo exhibition to date; as well as ICA, Singapore (2019), Project 7 1/2, Seoul (2017) and Silverlens Galleries, Manila (2016).Read More
