Beschreibung:

3 vol., number II of 10 copies on vellum with an additional suite of plates also on vellum, from an edition limited to 205, title-vignettes, 12 engraved plates, 5 maps, 4 head- and 4 tail-pieces by Rex Whistler, the 12 plates hand-coloured under the artist's supervision, with the additional suite of engravings all signed in ink by the artist and the 12 plates hand-coloured, slight natural discolouring to a few leaves in main text and very slightly affecting one or two plates, original russet niger with brass clasps and hasps, g.e., all the additional engravings loose as issued in paper or card mounts inside original russet niger folder, with invoice (for $3000) from Seven Gables Bookshop of New York dated 1970 loosely inserted, also T.L.s. from J.Paul Getty to W.R.Fletcher and Keith Fletcher's reply both concerning vellum copies of the book and their variations, preserved together in modern cloth drop-back box, [Whistler & Fuller 426], folio, Cresset Press, 1930. *** Whistler's magnum opus of illustration. Apparently inspired by Richard Bentley's Designs for Six Poems by Mr T.Gray of 1753 he drew the illustrations within elaborate rococo frames, each one different, many reflecting his love of Baroque architecture. He spent months on the detailed pen and ink drawings; according to his brother Laurence he sat up all night drawing one wheatsheaf. Dennis Cohen, the owner of the press, bought the original illustrations from Whistler for a modest sum and sold them on at a profit; later on the artist bought them back again for considerably more. Exhibited at Rex Whistler. The Triumph of Fancy, Brighton Museum, 2006.
