A group shot of seven company grade officers identified #1 through #7 with partial corresponding identification inked on verso. No back mark. Four of the officers wear typical short forage caps with the numeral “38” with bugle. A short-lived organization, the 38th US Infantry was organized in July 1866 composed of black troops. It was consolidated with the 41st US Inf. in March 1869 to form the all black 24th US Infantry. Identified in red ink on verso are: 1.) a a Surgeon Forward—William Henry Forward, Asst. Surgeon, 8/61; Major, Surgeon. 6/76; Lieut. Colonel 6/91; Brig General, Surgeon General 6/02; retired 9/02; Bvt. Captain and Major (3/65) for “faithful and meritorious service.” 2.) Capt. (illegible). 3.) Bvt. Lt. Col. Conyngham—John B. Conyngham, 2nd Lieut., 8th Pa. Inf. 4/61; Major, 52nd Pa. Inf. 11/61; Lieut. Colonel 1/64; Colonel 6/65; m/o 7/65. Captain 38th US Inf. 3/67; 24th Inf. 11/69. Bvt. Major for Yorktown (3/7/67); Bvt. Lieut. Colonel for Fair Oaks (3/7/67); died in service 5/71. 4.) Sutler, no information. 5.) Lt. Gardner—William F.
