A 19th century Napoleonic prisoner of war bone model of a 76 gun third rate ship of the line
CIRCA 1800
A 19th century Napoleonic prisoner of war bone model of a 76 gun third rate ship of the line circa 1800 the hull planked in bone over a wood plug, from the keel up and a double waist band with remnants of black polychroming between the gun ports, at the bow is a figure head of a Roman warrior with an upraised arm also with remnants of polychroming, the quarter galleries and transom are modeled with windows, cut and pierced and decorated with pieces of gilt brass and polychroming. The decks are of bone with the planking lines scored in and detailed with anchor rodes run out to the sea, cannons on carriages, pin and fife rails, railings, and other details. Rigged with three masts, bowsprit, standing and running rigging, turning blocks, cross spars, tops and trees, and deadeyes along with other rigging details and flying the remnants of an American flag [later] and a Jack at the bow. The model is set into a wood sea covered in paper [distressed] painted to represent the sea. Also set into the sea is a ship's long boat finished in black. The wood/sea base is framed in bone with the top edge scalloped to represent an undulating sea. Displayed within a later [20th century] glass and mahogany case. 12 x 15 in. (30.5 x 38.1 cm.) cased.
