Serial no. 14597. .450-400 – 2 7/8 Express. 28 inch barrels. Finely matted flat rib marked J. Purdey & Sons, Audley House, South Audley Street, London with standing rear sight with two folding leaves. Sights with platinum lines. Spear front sight. Rib with locking doll’s head third fastener. Casehardened boxlock action 70 percent engraved with very fine foliate scrolls. Extractor. Intercepting safety. Action with C Quality and Anson & Deeley Patent No. 12971. Automatic safety with SAFE in gold. Finely checkered pistolgrip stock of highly figured dark walnut. Drop points. Case hardened engraved steel grip cap. Checkered butt. Silver oval engraved with HMH. Sling eyes. Finely checkered splinter fore-end with Anson-style release. Relief panels at rear. Later oak and leather trunk case with an initial panel (detached) marked HMH. Brass corners and hardware. Circular brass escutcheon marked Bradshaw Hall. Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire . Maker’s label marked: By Appointment to His Majesty the King. Maroon baize interior. Accessories include: a wood cleaning rod with brass ends, a rosewood cleaning patch holder, a cartridge extractor marked J. Purdey & Sons, 450., and a steel oil bottle marked D 4695. Letter from Purdey’s, Obituary and Funeral notices. Condition: Excellent, as partially redone. Barrels with 94-96 percent older re-blued finish with some spotting. Bright bores with well-defined rifling. Action shows 70-80 percent case colors. Triggerguard shows 90 percent bluing. Grip cap shows 98 percent case colors. Older re-finished stock shows a ¾ by ¾ inch piece let into butt and areas of raised grain, a few scratches and nicks. Small chip out of edge of butt. Butt was checkered with the original recoil pad being removed. Fore-end shows a few nicks. Checkering is well-defined. Case lid is in fair condition. Lid is detached from the case and is missing the right side and rear leather hinge. Initial plate is detached. The lid interior is in very good condition. Remnants of a loading card remain. The base is in good condition with markings and staining to exterior. Large tear to leather on underside. Interior of base in very good condition. . Data: Proof: London, Black Powder, 400 ex.
