A black stone stele of a crowned Tathagata Northeastern India, Pala period, circa 10th century Standing on a double-lotus base with his right hand in varadamudra and his left raised holding the folds of his diaphanous sanghati , wearing a foliate torq, the face with full lips, downcast eyes and gently arched brows, surmounted by a tall foliate crown and backed by a nimbus, flanked by stupas with a parasol above and a diminutive figure of Buddha at the lower left, all surrounded by a flaming border with an inscription on the reverse 18 in. (45.7 cm.) high
