A black stone stele of Buddha Northeastern India, Pala period, 10th/11th century Seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base with his hands in bhumisparsamudra , clad in a sheer sanghati with the folds piled below the ankles, the face with gentle smile and heavy-lidded eyes flanked by pendulous earlobes, the hair in tight curls over the prominent ushnisha backed by a nimbus, flanked by diminutive stupas and surmounted by a parasol and the fronds of a tree, all surrounded by a flaming border with a lengthy inscription on the front 12 in. (30.5 cm.) high
