A black stone stele of Padmapani Northeastern India, Pala period, 10th century Seated in lalitasana on a double-lotus base with his pendant foot resting on a separate lotus, his lower right hand in varadamudra and his lower left supporting his weight and holding the stem of a lotus blossoming at his shoulder, with a mala and book in the upper two hands, dressed in a short dhoti and adorned with the sacred thread and various necklaces, the face with elongated and downcast eyes centered by a raised urna and surmounted by a low diadem, the hair in curly locks at the forehead and arranged in a tall chignon fronted by a diminutive image of Amitabha, surrounded by the Buddhist creed and a foliate border 18¼ in. (46.3 cm.) high
