A BÖTTGER (KPM) ELONGATED OCTAGONAL SUGAR-BOX AND COVER CIRCA 1723-25, BLUE K.P.M CROSSED SWORDS MARK, GILDER'S 61. TO BOTH Decorated in iron-red and gilding, the box of bombé form, painted with a continuous landscape with trees, dilapidated towers, fences and figures, one figure with barrels and packages outside a tent, the footrim and waisted stepped neck richly gilt, the central panel of the domed cover with two landscape vignettes flanking an octagonal knop finial, the stepped sides with two red bands enclosing a gilt band of interlocking scrolls and flowerheads, the upper red band with triangles edging lozenges, the lower band with Vitruvian scrolls, within a gilt band rim (box with very slight chipping to rim dating from time of manufacture, minor small firing crack to footrim, cover with restored rim chip, minute wear to gilt scrolls, wear to tip of final and slight wear to rim) 4¼ in. (10.9 cm.) wide
