McMurtry (1875-1959) was the dean of California bookbinders, and the backbone of the modern movement of hand binders. She studied under Ocavia Holden, founding director of the Bookbinder's Guild of California and was taught by the great French binders including Jules Domont, Henri Noulhac, Adolphe Cuzin, and Emile Maylander, she was a member of the Guild of Bookworkers from 1907 until at least 1947.
