A Catalogue of the...Collection of...Ralph Thoresby..., final leaf torn, Whiston Bristow, [?1764] bound with Blanckley (Mr) A Catalogue of a Collection of Greek, Roman, Saxon and English Coins and Medals...., lacking all after p.16, W.Bristow, [1760s] and Pococke (Dr. Richard) A Catalogue of a....Collection of Ancient Statues, Urns, Mummies, Fossils, Shells and other Curiosities, title defective at foot with slight loss (repaired with loss supplied in manuscript), Langford & Son, [?1766]; and with 19 others, similar (Thomas Saywell, 1774; Richard Bateman, 1774; Philip Carteret Webb, 1776; Topham Beauclerk, 1780; Sir Charles Frederick, Parts I-III, 1786; Mark Cephas Tutet, Parts I-III, Prints, Coins, Books, 1786; John White Part III, lacking all after p.10, 1788; Gustavus Brander, 1790; William Rawle 2 parts, 1790; Charles & Nathaniel Chauncy, 2 parts, second part with final blank, 1790; . Samuel Pegge, final two leaves stuck together at corner where final leaf slightly defective and repaired, 1797; undesignated catalogue, Gerard, 1790; Samuel Tyssen, one leaf defective at fore-edge with slight loss, repaired, 1802; Catalogue of the Statues...of J.B.Gianelli, Figure-Maker, n.d.), together 23 vol. in 1, all but the last sale catalogues, manuscript index in contemporary hand at beginning, with annotations to catalogues and some notes tipped in, a few lots marked and priced, light staining to upper outer corner, modern half morocco, uncut, most Gerard; and 2 others, coin sale catalogues, including a collection of Sotheby catalogues 1827-81 (most ruled and priced in manuscript), 8vo & 4to (3) *** A contemporary note before the Topham Beauclerk catalogue notes, "... [He] had the best library of any private Gentleman of his time...When he wanted Books, he sent Catalogues to such Booksellers as he thought could best lie out of their money; here the debt rested till his annuities came round, or till he had a successful run at play, when he discharged his Bill, often £15,000 at a time. His library sold at his death for £6008: The Duke of Marlborough, his Brother-in-Law had a Mortgage on it for £6000...".
