Walt Disney Studios, 1943. Gouache on trimmed celluloid, applied to an airbrushed Courvoisier background, matted and framed. Donald Duck has found a new friend in Jose Carica, a South American character, who shows him a bit about South America. Saludos Amigos was made at a time when many of the production staff were being drafted into World War II and the studio could not afford to make full feature films, but instead produced short segments. In addition, Walt Disney was approached by the office of Inter-American Affairs to go on a goodwill trip to South America to counteract the pro-Axis feeling. The government offered to pay for a portion of the trip which was enough of an enticement for Disney to go. Overall: 15.75 x 14 in.; within mat: 6.25 x 8 in.
