A COLLECTION OF MANUSCRIPT POEMS, LETTERS AND SIGNED BOOKS Thomas Bodkin (1887-1961)
An interesting collection of manuscript poems, letters and signed books relating to one of the foremost figures in the world of Irish art and cultural policy. The collection is comprised as follows: (... (1) A manuscript book of original love poems by Thomas Bodkin to his wife Aileen. A gift to his wife on the occasion of her twenty-first birthday, 22 October 1917, and added to over the years up until 1930. Twenty of the poems are written directly into the book and a further twenty-three are loosely inserted. Some of the poems were written simply to mark Valentine’s Day or Christmas; others refer to their daughters Mary and Anne, whilst a couple reflect on the tumultuous events of 1916. Also loosely inserted are two pen and ink sketches and a sample invitation card to their daughter Anne’s wedding at Brompton Oratory. (2) Two signed manuscript letters to Bodkin, one each from brothers Jack and William Butler Yeats. Jack Yeats’ letter was hand-delivered and the envelope has his personal monogram stamped on it. Written on the letterhead of the United Arts Club, 3 Upper Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin, and dated 13 September 1945, it refers to a meeting between Yeats and Bodkin. The letter from W. B. Yeats is addressed to Bodkin at 3 Wilton Terrace, Dublin, with the envelope post-marked 4 October 1928. Written on WBY's headed notepaper at 42 Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin, he apologises to Bodkin for missing a meeting. (3) Thomas Bodkin, Hugh Lane and His Pictures, Pegasus Press for the Government of the Irish Free State, Dublin, August 1932. Limited to 400 copies of which this is copy no. 1, inscribed by Bodkin: “The first copy for Emma with Tom's love / Lane was a real nice man - he liked you too”. Half green morocco over marbled boards in slipcase. (4) Thomas Bodkin, The Noble Science: John Leech in the Hunting Field, with an introduction by Sir Alfred Munnings, illustrated in colour and black and white. Inscribed by Bodkin: “For Emma with Tom’s Love, to go with the rest of them”. Oblong folio; original cloth boards and dust-jacket. (5) Thomas Bodkin, May It Please Your Lordships: Reproductions of Modern French Poems, limited edition of 560 copies of which this is no. 4, inscribed by Bodkin: “To my father and mother with my love, Tom”, and later reinscribed: “To my daughter Anne with my love Daddy 1935”. Dedicated in print “to my wife”, under which he has added “and Anne” in ink. (6) Thomas Bodkin, The Importance of Art to Ireland: A Lecture Delivered at Trinity College Dublin, June 1935, Three Candles Press, Dublin, 1935, original wrappers. (7) Thomas Bodkin, Report on the Arts in Ireland, Government Stationary Office, Dublin, 1949. (8) Desmond Ryan, Remembering Sion: A Chronicle of Storm and Quiet, Bodkin’s own copy, with his ownership signature and notes on the preliminary pages. (9) C. J. Cox, An Address Entitled ‘The Lawyer in Literature’ delivered at the Inaugural Meeting of the Thirtieth Session of the Solicitors’ Apprentices’ Debating Society of Ireland on the evening of Wed. 29th Oct. 1913, author’s presentation copy to Bodkin, signed and inscribed on the front cover more
