His Royal Highness Prince Alfred Ernest Albert 1st Duke of Edinburgh, was born on 6 August 1844, the second son of Queen Victoria. He succeeded his uncle as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and died in Coburg on 30 July 1900. The Royal Albert Hall was built between April 1867 and December 1870, and was formally opened by Queen Victoria on 29 March 1871.
