A COLLECTION OF MEDALS TO THE HOLMES FAMILY, ALONG WITH A 'WAR TROPHY' JAPANESE SWORD 1914/15 Trio to M2-119089 Pte A Holmes ASC Arthur Wright Holmes was born in South Ormsby, Lincolnshire in 1880. In civilian life, he was a Blacksmith Arthur Holmes first served with the 12th Corps, Troops, Supply Column (M.T. RASC), landing in France on 14th September 1915. He was then transferred to the 4th Bn of the Worchestershire Regiment. He survived the war and was discharged. The trio comes with a solid silver ID bracelet engraved ' Pte A W Holmes 119089 M.T 1st Cav Div Ch of Eng' He passed away in 1965. Trio correctly impressed. Star - 119089 Pte A Holmes ASC ; Pair - M2-119089 Pte A Holmes ASC Swing mounted as worn. Condition VF WW2 Mention in Despatches for Burma group to Major Oliver Wright Holmes AOC Holmes was born on the 16th of October 1909 in New Malden, Surrey. In civilian life, he started his career in hospital administration. Working in mental institutions for London Council Homles then attended Kings College London, where he read History. From 1939 to 1942 he served 51st Training Regiment Royal Armoured Corps in the UK, he was then commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Royal Ordnance Corps on 24th of November 1942. He served in Indian during 1943 and then in Burma from 1944 until 1946. During this period, he commanded the following units; No 52 Ordnance Field Depot, Myngaladon, Burma. No 62 Ordnance Field Depot, Rangoon. While in command of No 62, he took the surrender of a Japanese NCO and took possession of his sword. The original typed letter authorising Holmes to take the sword home as a trophy is included, as is the actual sword. Holmes was Mentioned in Despatches for ' Gallant and Distinguished services in Burma' the MID was announced in the London Gazette on 19th September 1946. In the post-war years, he returned to work with London county council, working on the Public control committee and the parks department. Holmes completed a Doctorate in Theology at Kings College between 1949 to 1952. Holmes retired in 1970 and passed away on 3rd July 1995. With a bound copy of his autobiography ' One Man's War' by Major O. Wright Holmes PH.D. Medals are swing mounted as worn. 1939 to 45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal with MID emblem.
