THOMPSON, KAY. 1909-1998. KNIGHT, HILARY illus. Consisting of nine volumes, all signed and dated by the illustrator, including: Eloise; Eloise in Paris; Eloise in Moscow; Eloise at Christmastime; Eloise Takes A Bawth; The Absolutely Essential Eloise; The Ultimate Edition Eloise; Eloise's Guide to Life; and The 365 Days of Eloise. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1999, 2000; 2002; and 2003. 8vo. Original laminated pictorial boards. ALL SIGNED AND DATED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR. The original Eloise quickly spawned three sequels and an aborted fourth. Miss Thompson eventually came to believe that the only one of any value was the first, so she let the other titles go out of print and stubbornly refused to let anyone reissue any of them during her lifetime. Her estate however was aware of what a demand there would be for the complete canon and gave permission in 1999 to make them available once again in handsome new editions. However, changes had to be made. For example, in 2003, Mr. Knight supplied Eloise at Christmastime with a new jacket and a new final spread showing all the gifts the girl has given the hotel's staff. Most important of all was the publication of the very last of the Eloise books written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight. Legendary children's book editor Ursula Nordstom at Harpers signed up Eloise Takes a Bawth for publication in Fall 1963. It got as far as galleys when Thompson killed the book. It was not until 2002 that the estate allowed Eloise Takes A Bawth (with "additional plumbing" by famed playwright Mart Crowley) to be published. Simon and Schuster issued in 1999 an expanded edition Eloise as The Absolutely Essential Eloise with Marie Brenner's "The Story of Eloise" taken from her Vanity Fair profile of Thompson and a newly illustrated autobiographical sketch by Mr. Knight. An omnibus of the four Eloise books appeared in 1999 as Eloise: The Ultimate Edition, again with the new material from The Absolutely Essential Eloise and an absolutely new jacket design. Eloise's Guide to Life cobbled together observations from the books with some additional new illustrations just for this publication. Mr. Knight not only illustrated but also wrote in Thompson's manner The 365 Days of Eloise, complete with stickers at the back.
