A Confession of Faith, Owned and Consented to by the Elders and Messengers Of the Churches In the Colony of Connecticut in New England, Assembled by Delegation at Say Brook, September 9th 1708. New London, Connecticut: Timothy Green, 1710 (this edition printed 1760). 24mo, brown leather boards, 118pp. The first edition of this book, printed in 1710, was only the second work known to have been printed in Connecticut (the first being Eliphat Adams' pamphlet "The Necessity of Judgment"). The book documents the "Saybrook Platform," which was a new constitution of the Congregational Church in Connecticut resulting from the meeting of church elders held at Saybrook on September 9, 1708. The new organization centralized the administration of the church in a way similar to what the Presbyterian Church had done, in contrast to the localism of congregations in England. This particular edition, which we believe to be just the second printing (although we cannot guarantee that), was printed in 1760, 52 years after the platform was established but still about 100 years before its influence was eroded. Condition: Shelf wear with about 1 in. of separation between the cover and spine near the top edge. Inscribed with names of 12 owners on FFEP. Interior leaves toned, with minor chipping at edges.
