A Dutch engraved armorial commemorative goblet for the House of Orange-Nassau, signed and dated by Jacob Sang the round funnel bowl engraved and polished with the crowned arms of William V of Orange, within the Garter ribbon and inscribed VIVAT ORANGE., supported on a cushion knop above an inverted baluster stem with bead inclusions and a basal knop, on a conical foot, the latter inscribed Jacob Sang Fec=Amsterdam 1766, 19cm high Provenance: A private collection from County Antrim. Purchased from the Collection of the late A.J. Guepin, Ex-lot 123, Christie's Amsterdam, 5th July 1989. Note: William V, Prince of Orange (1748-1806), last Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic. He became Stadtholder in 1766, the year of his majority but was forced to flee to England in 1795 after the Flanders campaign when the Dutch Republic was occupied by revolutionary French forces and replaced with the French puppet or client state of the Batavian Republic. With the defeat of France, the Batavian Republic seemed unwilling to accept the return of William V, but his son, William I, became the first King of the Netherlands. Jacob Sang was born in Germany and was known to be working in Amsterdam by 1748 and sold his glass at the 'English Glass Shop'. Condition report disclaimer
