A Dutch mahogany musical longcase clock By Jan Oortwijn (1747-1798), Groningen, late 18th Century The line-inlaid case on ribbon-tied claw-and-ball feet, bombé canted plinth, rectangular cut-cornered trunk door, the glazed gilt-metal lenticle cast with a flaming urn, the arched hood centring on a bracket carved with a basket of flowers, side and frieze sound frets, brass-capped fluted pilasters, caddy top with the figure of Atlas flanked by two herald figures, the dial signed J OORTWIJN TE GRONINGEN on the silvered chapter ring, pierced gilt-metal hands, the matted centre with subsidiary seconds ring and rings for tune selection and days of the week, month and season sectors, painted moonphase in the arch, pierced foliate spandrels, the eight-day movement with anchor escapement striking one bell and playing four tunes on eleven bells via a 10cm. brass cylinder, and with later gong attached to the backboard and signed BRUMMER , restorations and alterations to case and movement 310cm. high x 70cm. wide x 34cm. deep
