A DUTCH MAHOGANY MUSICAL LONGCASE CLOCK BY PIETER VAN DEN BERGH, ROTTERDAM (1732-1792), THIRD QUARTER 18TH CENTURY The moulded arched hood centred by a foliate clasp with later domed top and soundfrets to the sides, surmounted by giltwood figural finials, the hood with plisters headed by gilt-brass acanthus capitals, above an arched trunk door with glazed lenticle and gilt-brass mount depicting Father Time, the case with canted angles and bombé plinth on claw and ball feet, the dial with engraved border, leaf cast spandrels, the silvered and arcaded Roman and Arabic chapterring signed Pieter van den Bergh/ROTTERDAM , subsidiary rings above for Slaan/Niet Slaan and Speelen/Niet Speelen each engraved with a figure playing a musical instrument, the matted and engraved centre with subsidiary seconds ring centred by a date aperture and apertures for month an day of week, the painted, silvered and engraved rolling moon with orbs to the front well engraved with musicians, the arch above with twelve tune selection, the eight day five pillar movement with Dutch rack strike on two bells, and music on thirteen bells and 29 hammers, 21.5 cm. long pinned barrel; three weights; pendulum; crank key 275 cm. high
