A DUTCH WALNUT AND BURR-WALNUT LONGCASE CLOCK WITH 'SCHEEPJESMECHANIEK' (AUTOMATON SHIPS) ABRAHAM VAN AKEN, AMSTERDAM. CIRCA 1770-1780 The case of typical form, the hood surmounted by giltwood figural finials, the door and rectangular plinth base with canted shaped angles inlaid with fruitwood line marquetry, the polychrome painted brass dial with an aperture showing five rocking ships, a whale and a rowing boat against an icy sea and pole landscape, the figures of Mercury and Neptune flanking the silvered and arcaded chapter ring above, signed AB M VAN AKEN, AMSTERDAM , the matted centre with silvered seconds ring, date aperture and sectors for month and day of week engraved with representational figures, moonphase to the top, the eight-day four pillar movement with anchor escapement and Dutch rack strike on two bells above; door key, crank key, pendulum, two brass weights 285 cm. high
