A FINE AND MASSIVE SANCAI-GLAZED FIGURE OF A LOKAPALA TANG DYNASTY Of noble stature, standing atop an amber-glazed bull recumbent on a naturalistic pierced rockwork base, the bull's features well delineated and its tail whipped to one side and glazed green, the lokapala superbly modeled with his right hand on his hip and the left raised to hold a halberd, the upper arms encased by the mouths of monster-mask epaulets molded in high relief at each shoulder, wearing breast and backplates bound with a cord and ending in a hem cut with trefoils below a twisted sash around the waist, with further cords binding the similarly decorated leg coverings, covered in rich shades of amber, green and cream glaze attractively applied, the hands and head left unglazed, his face modeled with furrowed brow, protuberent eyes and flaring nostrils framed by the upturned, peaked brim of the helmet surmounted by a knop finial and bearing traces of pigment, restorations--47 in.
