A FINE AND RARE GERMAN IRON RIFLED CANNON BEARING THE PORTRAIT BUST AND MONOGRAM OF HERZOG AUGUST WILHELM VON BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL-BEVERN BY HAUSCHKA, DATED '1729' With five stage barrel rifled with ten grooves, silver fore-sight, the muzzle, chase, vent and cascable each with silver-inlaid ornament, the second reinforce with gilt-brass lifting handles cast and chased as stylised dolphins, signed and dated on the first reinforce ring, the first reinforce with large applied cast and chased bronze portrait bust retaining traces of original gilding with a silver-inlaid canopy above and a large gold- and silver-inlaid martial trophy below involving bound captives, the von Braunschweig ducal coat of arms, and a ducal crown with the monogram 'AW' above, on original wooden carriage bound with bronze plates retained by iron rivets, and fittings including iron cap squares each with floral engraving The barrel 43 ½ in. (111 cm.) long, bore diam. approx. 1 3/8 in. (3.5 cm.)
