A fine and rare mid 19th-Century French lacquered and oxidised-brass theodolite, signed on the bubble level BELLIENI à NANCY , in the original fitted oak case -- 27.7cm. (10 7/8in.) wide See Colour Illustration The 21cm. long telescope has dust-caps for both the objective lens and the eyepiece, with rack and pinion focusing adjustment to the latter. It is secured via a sprung screw on one side to an oxidised-brass A-frame upright over the horizontal circle. At the centre is a short column with a sprung tension screw. The lacquered-brass cased bubble level also has a sprung mounting at one end for fine adjustment. A vernier graduated 0-30° is stamped on the edge of the main circle, arranged to read off an outer circle graduated 0-360°, labelled every 10° and with 1° subdivisions. Mounted on the top side of the horizontal circle is also an arrangement combining a screw clamp and a tangent screw for fine adjustment. The circle is raised on a short brass column, threaded on the underside for tripod or staff mounting, and with three splayed legs with adjustable screw feet. There is also a screw clamp and a tangent screw for fine adjustment. The original fitted oak carrying case has one steel handle and two brass hooks and eyes, and is stamped BELLIENI Constructeur NANCY in the lid. Also included is a brass plummet stamped 28 on the underside, a screw driver, the wooden handle wrapped around with the cord for the plummet, the steel blade stamped W.H. OLAY L T D and an instruction card, applied with manuscript directions for use on both sides, written in French and entitled Instruction sur le cercle Geodesique
