By Funabashi Shumin (born 1859), Meiji Period The greenish-coloured nashiji ground of the overlapping cover embellished in gold, silver, togidashi and slight-coloured takamakie with a Winter evening scene of possibly Kofuku-ji in Nara; with the partly-obscured roofs of Sanjunoto on the left and Nanendo on the right, visible from amidst the pine trees, a large weeping willow growing on the river bank in the foreground, with the moon faintly reflected in the water, the discreet details highlighted in kirikane, the design extending over the sides of the lid and the box, the inside of the lid similarly lacquered with snow-covered reeds growing against the river stumps at the foot of the hillocks, against a background of distant mountains, the snow-laden reeds' motif and ducks swimming in the river continue to the inside of the fitted, ensuite, moveable tray that holds the suzuri inkstone, a silvered-metal water-dropper in the form of two overlapping squares decorated in gold hiramakie with two phoenixes in flight amidst flowering peony blossoms, an ink-stick holder, a knife, a spike, and two brushes, with kinji holders and silver fittings decorated with stylised snowflakes, the underside finished in rich nashiji; signed Funabashi Shumin in gold lacquer with tsubo-shaped seal, with two wood, double storage boxes. 4.5cm x 23cm x 26cm (1¾in x 9in x 10¼in).
