A fine late 18th-Century English standing universal equinoctial ring dial, signed on the meridian circle THO HEATH LONDON, the equinoctial ring graduated on one side with hours I-XII (x2) and minutes, the inner face similarly graduated, the other face with the names and latitudes of twenty-two cities and towns, the bridge with sliding pin-hole sight and fine and decorative scroll engraving at either end, one side with a calendar scale with months and days, the other with a Zodiacal and Equinoctial scale, the meridian circle with names and latitudes of nineteen towns and cities on one side, with signature, the other side graduated 0°-90° in four quadrants, arranged to read off a scale marked 0-30 30-0 and 60-30 30-60 on one side of the throne, this with scroll top, decorative foliate engraving and suspension ring, the whole raised on two scroll-shaped supports from the horizontal plate, with central glazed compass graduated 0°-360° and 0°-90° (x4), with foliate decoration in the centre, two cross-bubbles, one marked W and N at either end, the other marked S at one end, the iron needle with quartz crystal cap, the surround graduated with days of the month and minutes faster or slower than the sun, and degrees of amplitute and azimuth 0°-360°, with three scroll supports for adjustable screw feet, one engraved V on the flat top surface -- 15in.
