In the manner of John Blades, circa 1810 Each with a central mask surrounded by cut-glass prisms over an open lyre support, mounted with two scrolled arms supporting cut-glass nozzles, raised on an ovoid cut-glass shaft on a circular base. Height 23in (58.4cm); width 14 1/2in (36.8cm) Literature: cf. Jonathan Bourne and Vanessa Brett, Lighting in the Domestic Interior, 1991, p. 170, figs. 570, 571; Martin Mortimer, The English Glass Chandelier, 2000, pp. 134-137, pl. 82, and pp. 167-168, pl. 106; Nicholas Goodison & Robin Kern, Eighty Years of Antique Dealing, London, 2004, pp. 182-183. John Blades produced an extensive range of candelabra and chandeliers combining finely cut glass drops and classically inspired gilt-bronzes. The firm, recorded in the London Guide at 5 Ludgate Hill beginning in 1783 and remaining until Blade's death in 1829, developed an extensive overseas business in the Middle East and India. A chandelier decorated with gilt-metal masks and glass sunbursts is in the collection of the Victoria Art Gallery, Melbourne; a pair of candelabra with faceted diamond-cut bases and a drawing by John Blades dated 1828 upon which they are based are both illustrated in M. Mortimer, The English Chandelier, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 2000, pp. 140-141, pl. 84-85.
