A FINE PAIR OF SCOTTISH ALL-METAL FLINTLOCK BELT PISTOLS BY JOHN MURDOCH
CIRCA 1750-60
A FINE PAIR OF SCOTTISH ALL-METAL FLINTLOCK BELT PISTOLS BY JOHN MURDOCH CIRCA 1750-60 Each with three-stage barrel with flared octagonal muzzle, ramped fluted breech and engraved with characteristic panels of scrolling foliage, bevelled lock signed 'Jo:Murdoch', engraved borders and tail, and the cock incorporating a pierced engraved disc behind the comb, three-quarter length stock engraved with neo-Celtic patterns of interlace inlaid with silver over the length of the butt, with panels of foliage and border ornament over the remaining surfaces, inlaid with three engraved silver bands on the underside, a pair of silver escutcheons, one engraved with the owner's crest and motto and the other with his monogram, silver button trigger and pricker each engraved with an expanded rosehead, engraved belt hook with pierced engraved finial, and original moulded iron ramrod (the stocks each with small patches of light pitting, the escutcheons rubbed, one trigger button dented). 11¼in (28.6cm) (2)
