A FINE SAXON RAPIER WITH SILVER EMBELLISHMENT LAST QUARTER OF THE 16TH CENTURY With stout tapering double-edged blade of hexagonal section cut on each side at the forte with a short fuller, hilt comprising short silver collar covering the ricasso, blackened iron guard with large outer-ring and slightly arched spatulate quillons each bearing a silver plaque, inner-guard of slender bars incorporating a thumb-ring, silver quillon-block, short grip bound with silver wire, large plummet-shaped pommel retaining traces of black shellac finish and overlaid with domed silver cap, and prominent silver tang-button, the principle silver elements each engraved with panels of foliage bordered by ribbons 41½in. (105.4cm.) blade
