A Fine Scale Model of the Clipper Ship Comet Michael Costagliola (American, 20th century) This is a very fine scale model based on research and plans and built to museum quality standards. The hull of the model is built up from the solid with black painted topsides and a copper plated bottom with over 1500 miniature copper plates. The deck of the model is planked in basswood and is fitted with numerous details which include: anchors, capstans, deck eyes, bilge pumps, bell, ladders, anchor chain, cargo hatches, pin & fife rails, deck house, ship's boats lashed amidships and on davits to either side, companionways, skylight, spare spar bundles, binnacle, ship's wheel and more. The model is fitted with a bowsprit, three masts, cross spars, stun'sail booms, spanker boom and gaff, tops and trees. The ship is very well rigged with standing and running rigging which includes: ratlines, deadeyes, chain plates, forestays, back stays, halyards, topping lifts, bracing lines, sheets and more. The model is displayed on a pair of brass pedestals mounted on a maple board. Attached to the baseboard is a faux ivory plaque which is inscribed "Clipper Ship Comet 1851/Built New York City - launched May 10, 1851" The model is displayed in a mahogany and glass case with built in lighting (not illustrated). 39 x 11½ x 26½ in. (99 x 29.2 x 67.2 cm.) model dimensions on stand.
