A Fine Second World War Normandy Operations Military Cross Group of Six to Capt. Lawrence Aubrey Grosvenor, 269352, 6th Battalion The Green Howards, comprising Military Cross, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star and War Medal. The Military cross in original case, others still contained in OHMS despatch box, and ribbons unattached. This lot also includes a photograph album, Officers roll book, scrap book including photographs, telegrams, press cuttings, invitation to MC Investiture at the Palace of Holyrood House (many items stuck down). Having landed on Gold Beach during D-Day, the Military Cross was awarded after an action on 27th June 1944, the detail of which is contained in the story of The Green Howards by Captain W.A.T.Synge and states "On 27 June, the Battalion was ordered to make yet another attack on La Taille, this time under cover of a heavy artillery barrage and machine-gun concentration. Early that morning a fighting patrol was sent out under Lieutenant A. Grosvenor with orders to shoot up any enemy who might be in two houses just north-west of La Taille. The patrol found the houses unoccupied, but, on a further reconnaissance, Lieutenant Grosvenor ran into some enemy at a cross roads near La Taille. On engaging them he soon discovered that their strength was approximately one platoon with four light machine-guns, and so, holding his ground, he sent back for the remainder of his platoon. When it arrived, he placed his Bren guns in a position from which they could give covering fire, and then led two sections in an attack on the enemy's left flank. This was highly successful, and nine Germans were killed and four captured. The enemy then counter-attacked, supported by mortars, and additional machine-guns. Lieutenant Grosvenor held on to his position, inflicting more casualties on the enemy, until it became untenable. He then made an organised withdrawal with his platoon to another position some two hundred yards to the rear, and engaged the enemy again. Eventually he arrived back in his Company's lines, having sustained only three casualties. The captured Germans, and Lieutenant Grosvenor, gave information which proved invaluable in planning the attack which took place later in the day. Lieutenant Grosvenor was awarded the Military Cross for his courage and leadership..." A Cresswell man, Capt. Grosvenor played for Mansfield Town FC before the War and was presented with MC by King George VI on 3rd September 1945.
