Performed under the Direction of Captains Cook, Clerke, and Gore, in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Discovery; in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780... The second Edition. I-III (atlas included). London (printed by H. Hughs, for G. Nicol, and T. Cadell) 1785 . Large 4:o (297x234 mm.). 3 titles with engraved vignettes, 87 partly folding or double-page engraved maps, charts and plates (all, including the atlas, partly offsetting from text to plates or from plates to text, some foxing). Contemporary marbled polished brown full calf, somewhat worn, gilt borders, gilt inner borders, gilt edges of covers, richly gilt spines, slightly faded, with red and dark blue title fields. One spine with small damage at head (vol. III, the third voyage) , vol. II-III of the same with small cracks in lower part of the joints, partly mended in the joints. 6 volumes. James Cook (1728-1779), British navigator and famous explorer. His achievements in mapping the Pacific, New Zealand and Australia radically changed western perceptions of world geography. He discovered and charted New Zeeland and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia and made his first voyage around the world in 1768-71 in the ship Endeavour. In the second voyage 1772-75 he looked for the southern continent in the ships Resolution and Adventure. In his third and last voyage in the years 1776-80 in the ships Resolution and Discovery, he tried to find the North-West Passage, but instead found and explored the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii).
