Attributed to Ishikawa Rensai, unsigned Japan, Tokyo, Asakusa, second half of 19th century The front elaborately worked in sukashi-bori (openwork) depicting the three friends of winter or shochikubai, the design showing overlapping bamboo (take) and pine (matsu) leaves, framed by a ‘cloud-ribbon’ outline of a five-petaled plum (ume) blossom. The reverse shows two further outlines of a plum blossom, the central one ingeniously forming the himotoshi. The stag antler of a very appealing color. LENGTH 4.4 cm Condition: Excellent condition with natural age cracks. Provenance: British private collection.
