A FINELY CARVED BLACK AND RED LACQUER 'PHEONIX AND PEONY' BOWL MING DYNASTY, 15TH CENTURY The bowl is carved to the exterior through layers of black lacquer depicting phoenixes flying amongst blossoming peony scrolls, against a red diamond-diaper ground. The mouth rim is encircled by a band of lingzhi scroll carved against a wavy diaper ground, and the foot by a band of keyfret. The interior and base of the bowl are painted red. 5 1/2 in.
