A First Day of the Somme M.C. and Bar group of four awarded to Captain G. E. Porter, Devon Regiment, later 20th battalion Tank Corps Military Cross, G.V.R., the reverse inscribed ‘July 1st. 1916 G. E. Porter. 2nd Lieut., 9th Devons Presented Oct. 21st. 1916’, with Second Award Bar; 1914-15 Star (1948 Pte., H.A.C.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt.), good very fine (4) Footnote M.C. London Gazette 26 September, 1916: Temporary Second Lieutenant, 9th Bn. Devon Regt. ‘For conspicuous gallantry under heavy shell and machine gun fire during an attack. He organised the battalion on reaching the final objective, all the other officers having become casualties and displayed the greatest coolness and courage.’ Bar to M.C. London Gazette 25 November, 1916: Temporary Second Lieutenant, 9th Bn. Devon Regt. ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He reformed his men and organised the defence of the position under very heavy fire, displaying great courage and initiative.’ George Edward Porter enlisted into the Honourable Artillery Company in September 1914 and proceeded to France at the end of the year. He was commissioned into the Devon Regiment in March 1916, joining the 9th battalion in France. On the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, seventeen out of eighteen company officers were killed or wounded; Second Lieutenant Porter alone remained unhurt and took command of the battalion on reaching the final objective. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions on that historic day and received a bar to the decoration in the battle of Ginchy, August-September, 1916. He subsequently transferred to the 20th battalion, Tank Corps, and relinquished his commission in September 1919.
