A FRENCH PARCEL-GILT SILVER AGRICULTURAL PRIZE CENTREPIECE
MARK OF CHRISTOFLE, DATED 1861
A FRENCH PARCEL-GILT SILVER AGRICULTURAL PRIZE CENTREPIECE MARK OF CHRISTOFLE, DATED 1861 The central tazza surmounted by Ceres, goddess of agriculure, standing on a pedestal applied with the French Imperial eagle and inscribed Decernée à Concours régional de Toulouse chased in relief with four vignettes of ploughing, wine-making, harvesting and grazing cattle, horses, sheep and pigs titled respectively Labourage, Vendange, Moisson and Paturage , inscribed around rim Ministère de l'Agriculture du Commerce et des Travaux Publics MDCCCLXI , supported on a fluted column with campana-shaped top within a cage of vines, at the base of which are a bull and sheep couchant and a standing ram together with a scythe and plough handle centred by a spray of grasses and cereals, the foot signed Ch. Christofle Ft.1861 , engraved all around with alternate hops and vine leaves and raised on four openwork bracket feet embellished with hops and foliage 25 in. high (64 cm.) 288 oz. (9072 gm.)
