A George III mahogany stool, in the manner of Thomas Chippendale circa 1800, of Royal Interest, rectangular top, upholstered seat, canted stool centred by roundels, serpentine frieze, square section legs, guttae feet, bearing printed and inscribed paper label 'WINDSOR CASTLE Room: 513, No. 24, approximately 47cm high (1ft 6in), 60cm wide (1ft 11in) 49cm deep (1ft 7in) The room no. 513 refers to St George’s Hall in Windsor, and the item no. 24 was for 40 stools ‘each 1ft 11ins x 1ft 6ins, the frames of polished mahogany, the seats stuffed and covered with crimson silk damask’. A note stuck into the inventory shows that 20 of the stools were purchased in 1909 from Waring & Gillow (17 March). The provenance of the remaining twenty are unknown. Most of the stools were already out of the Collection by the 1950s but it is not recorded exactly when this happened. Believed to be from the 1877 inventory of Windsor. Unfortunately no image of the stools is available however the measurements do match those of the stool currentlybeing offered. See also Christie's 5th December 2012 ' Collecting in the Royal Tradition', King Street, Lot 597 for a George III mahogany stool, attributed to Thomas Chippendale from The collections of the Royal Family, Buckingham Palace, London, and by descent to H.R.H. The Princess Mary, Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood (1897-1965) and by descent at Harewood House, Yorkshire For a very closely related example see also Bonhams, Fine English Furniture, Bond Street, Lot 117, sale 20741. The lot notes discuss the suite of related stools at Windsor Castle of which our stool may be one, although this note related to a set of stools in The King's closet. A pair of George III stools of the same pattern but lacking the carved reeding have been recorded with the 1866 Buckingham Palace brand (Christie's London, 27 June 1985, lot 119; Phillips London, 12 June 2001, lot 64).
