A GEORGE III ORMOLU, GOLD, AGATE, AND GLASS-MOUNTED AND PASTE-GEM SET MUSICAL AND AUTOMATON TABLE CLOCK WITH NECESSAIRE

A GEORGE III ORMOLU, GOLD, AGATE, AND GLASS-MOUNTED AND PASTE-GEM SET MUSICAL AND AUTOMATON TABLE CLOCK WITH NECESSAIRE BY JAMES COX LONDON. CIRCA 1770-1775 THE CASE: in the form of a bureau-cabinet, its cresting inset with a pocket-watch movement with white enamel Roman and Arabic dial, signed JAS. COX/LONDON , with revolving armillary above (now lacking connection), the cabinet embellished with gold foliate scroll and flower mounts overlaid on panels of agate to all sides, its upper section with doors opening to reveal mirror panels and a removeable necessaire drawer with glazed and colonnaded front panel, with key drawer below, the rear of the upper cabinet lined in green silk, the necessaire comprising three faceted glass bottles with gold stoppers (one stopper lacking), brush, scissors, pocket knife, tweezers, marine ivory notelet, miniature spoon and others (some accessories lacking), the bombé lower section with upper mounts and base pierced for sound and housing a musical movement, with with paste-gem set catches to its front for tune selection, stop-start and concealment of the winding arbor, all mounted on the backs of four well-chased ormolu bulls secured to a plain brass platform, above a plinth cast elaborately with rockwork and supported in turn by four winged dragons with tails projecting to the underside, with glazed front panel showing painted metal swans moving in two directions on three spiral-twist automaton glass rods against a background cast with rockwork and a castle and centred by six spiral-twist glass rods simulating a waterfall; the case formerly with floral vase finials THE THREE MOVEMENTS: all independent, the watch mechanism housed within a detachable glazed drum case pinned to the rear of the cresting, chain fusee with verge escapement, the visible balance with decorative faceted and polished steel rim and the spring regulated from an enamel dial above calibrated 1-5; the musical movement also with chain fusee and playing a selection of six tunes on eight bells with eight hammers via a 1 in. long pinned cylinder; the automaton movement with manual release and winding arbor to the underside of the base, also powered by a chain fusee 16¾ in. (42.5 cm.) high, 14½ in. (37 cm.) wide, 9¼ in. (24 cm.) deep (max.)
