The square section curved handle leading to a hinged lid raised by a pierced shell thumb piece. The top of lid engraved with a coat of arms in a shield shape cartouche below a rosettes and swags. The front of the tankard with engraved initials JM in flourished cursive script. Fully marked underneath and part-marked to lid. Height – 14.3 cm / 5.7 inches Weight – 618 grams / 19.87 ozt The arms are for Foulis A John Foulis esq is recorded as in the summary of the Wakelin ledgers Schrager, L., The Royal and Aristocratic Patronage of Wakelin and Tayler, 1776-92, (2006) The journal of the silver society, no 21, p.87-104. who is probably John Robinson Foulis of Buxton and Heslerton esq (1761-1826) the son of Sir William Foulis (d.1756) of Ingleby manor, York, who married on the 16th of November 1795 Decima-Hester-Beatrix, daughter of Sir Christopher Sykes (1749-1801) second Baronet of Sledmere.
