A GEORGE IV CARVED GILTWOOD FRAMED FOUR SEATER SOFA, formally in the possession of the Irish writer Lennox Robinson, the central hump back and frame carved with foliate swags having outscrolling arms and raised on cabriole legs 211cm wide Provenance: Dr Lennox Robinson, playwright and director of the Abbey Theatre; The estate of Tony Sweeney In I955 he was painted by Robertson Craig seated on this couch, with his wife in the background at her sewing machine and his beloved white scotch terrier Sylvester in the foreground. At this time he and his wife Lottie (nee Smith) were living at number 20 Longford Terrace, Monkstown, Co Dublin. Accompanying authentication material: Two photographs, one a silver framed and glazed colour version, the other in black and white of the painting which is now at the Hugh Lane Gallery having been presented by Friends of The National Collections of Ireland: An original photograph of the couch with an inscription on the back in Lennox's hand ''W. B. Yeats ''snap'' seated thereon at Sorrento Cottage (Lennox Robinson's house) by F J McCormick. (W.B.Y. did not know he was being taken). Date 1930'': Printed Works: ''Come Dance With Me'' - By Ninette de Valois - Printed at Letchworth in 1959. 8vo. This is one of half a dozen books in which the W B Yeats snapshot is reproduced. Pictures in A Theatre, A Conversation Piece - By Lennox Robinson - Printed in Dublin, 1946. 8vo. Illustrated. This was compiled from a series of articles published in 1946 in the Leader and deals with the Abbey. Bryan Cooper - By Lennox Robinson - Printed in Glasgow, 1931. 8vo, Illustrated. This is a biography of the last member of a great house, Markree Castle in Co Sligo. His re-arrangement of the celebrated Markree Library, signified by a special bookplate, which he carried out just before the outbreak of the Ist World War in which he took part, will ensure that his name lives on the hearts of Irish book collectors. It is to be found on the Ludlow Memoirs in our collection.
