A George IV goncalo alves kidney shaped writing table, circa 1825, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster, shaped top with moulded edge, twin turned and lotus carved stems, carved twin scroll stretcher, four flower carved downswept legs, carved egg and claw feet, 74cm high, 90cm wide, 51cm deep For a table of related design, stamped Gillows, see Christies, English Furniture, 10th June 1999, Lot 199 This type of kidney shaped table was described by Thomas Chippendale as a 'horseshoe' table in 1772 (see C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale London, 1978, vol. II, p. 234, figs. 427, 428). The form was also popularised as a 'horseshoe' table by Thomas Sheraton in his October 1792 engraving published in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1791-4. Some versions include the central book-rest, which also features in Gillows' sketch for a horseshoe table executed in September 1792 (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 40). For a related table see Bonhams Fine English Furniture & Works of Art, London, 13th June 2012, lot 122 This table relates to a pair of Gonçalo Alves card tables which are stamped Gillows, sold Bonhams, London, 16 July 2008, lot 130 and formerly part of the Peter Bracewell collection. The pair of card tables can also be seen illustrated in S.Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, plate 267. The 'reptilian' style carving of the feet in particular are similar to those of the table currently being offered.
