A GERMAN ETCHED HORSEMAN'S HAMMER LATE 16 T H CENTURY With conical hammer head and robust down-curved fluke formed in one piece, the latter of tapering stiff-diamond section changing to a rounded neck, fitted with belt hook on one side and retained by a domed cap, on its slender haft widening towards a rectangular base, fitted with small disc-guard drawn-up sharply to a point on the outside, decorated throughout with spiralling patterns of nodular tendrils arranged in panels within beaded and linear borders, and fitted with later fabric-covered wooden grip studded with nails. 22 1/8in (56.2cm)
