A gold painted plaster bas-relief plaque of the Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima. [Washington: c. 1950-54.] A plaster bas-relief plaque of the Iwo Jima flag raising, this example painted in gold. 285 x 240mm. (11 x 9.25 inches.) Provenance: The Estate of Felix de Weldon; The War Museum, and exhibited at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum, New York, 1995-2007. De Weldon had originally intended that this small size bas-relief would be worked up into a larger memorial some 20 times the size. In reality a bronze version at this size was incorporated into the Marine Memorial on Mount Suribachi, which was unveiled in 1995 on the 50 year anniversary. Earlier in 1988 a 10 foot bronze version was put up near Tampa on the Interstate 4, paid for by a dedicated veteran. This example was retained by de Weldon, but a few of these small plaster plaques were given to the major financial contributors to the Arlington Marine Memorial.
