A good 19th-Century hydrometer set, by J. Dicas, Liverpool, in a fitted mahogany case -- 21.5cm. (8½in.) wide See Colour Illustration The brass hydrometer is stamped DICAS PATENTER and has a scale 0-10 for the 33 (of 36) weights; these are each numbered in mulitples of 10 from 0-350, and each stamped 1545 and ID . Also in compartments in the case are an ivory slide rule and an ivory-mounted thermometer. The rule has scales for water, alcohol and proof (twice), and is stamped DICAS LIVERPOOL PATENTER ; the thermometer has a scale -20-130 and is stamped DICAS LIVERPOOL . There is also a card for DIRECTIONS FOR PROVIDING THE STRENGTH OF SPIRITOUS LIQUORS BY THE HYDROMETER INVENTED AND MADE BY J. DICAS, MATHEMATICAL INSTRUMENT MAKER, POOL-LANE, LIVERPOOL and a manuscript sheet of notes. The case has green felt lining and space for a beaker ( missing ), and a brass hook and nail.
