A Great War 'air ace' D.F.C. group of three awarded to Lieutenant L.A. Ashfield, Royal Air Force, late Royal Naval Air Service DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS, G.V.R.; BRITISH WAR MEDAL (Lieut., R.A.F.) attempted erasure of rank; VICTORY MEDAL (Lieut., R.A.F.) renamed, generally very fine (3) Footnote D.F.C., London Gazette, 3 August, 1918. 'A very capable officer of exceptional judgement and courage. He has carried out sixty-two flights behind the enemy lines with invariable success. During the last few months he has engaged seventeen enemy machines and has been instrumental in destroying five. On one occasion he attacked five enemy aeroplanes, bringing down one in flames. Lionel Arthur Ashfield was posted to No. 2 Squadron R.N.A.S. on 17 November 1917, and subsequently to No. 202 Squadron Royal Air Force. He was killed in action on 16 July 1918, when on a photo-reconnaissance mission, '... last seen making towards sea, S.W. of Ostend with 3 enemy aircraft in pursuit.' He is officially credited with 6 enemy victories. The group is sold with extensive research including combat reports and extracts from Squadron Record Books.
