Title: A Green Hand's First Cruise, Roughed Out from the Log-Book of Memory, of Twenty-Five Years Standing: Together with a Residence of Five Months in Dartmoor. Author: [Cobb, Josiah] A Younker Place: Baltimore Publisher: Cushing & Brother Date: 1841 Description: Two volumes. 278; 329 pp. (8vo) 7½x4½, original ribbed gray cloth, spines gilt lettered rebound in black cloth with nearly all of original spines & covers laid down. First Edition; a possibly simultaneous edition was issued in Boston by Otis, Broaders, and Co. Like most narratives of the unfortunate War of 1812, this lively narrative has been generally overlooked. The youthful protagonist had barely embarked on his first cruise on a privateering brig when the vessel was captured by a British frigate and most of the crew dispatched to the horrors of Dartmoor Prison, from which the author emerged well after the end of the war. Howes C-515; Sabin 28575. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine and cover cloth trimmed when laid down; foxing throughout; else very good. Item number: 186079
