Like most narratives of the unfortunate War of 1812, this lively narrative has been generally overlooked. The youthful protagonist had barely embarked on his first cruise on a privateering brig when the vessel was captured by a British frigate and most of the crew dispatched to the horrors of Dartmoor Prison, from which the author emerged well after the end of the war.
