A hand scrivened and illuminated vellum grant of arms dated 16th July 1870, to Thomas Scambler Owden, Gentleman of Middlesex, Alderman for ... Bishopsgate Ward, City of London. Arms of the grantee top left, with those of the Sovereign (with Hanover in Pretence), flanked by those of the Duke of Norfolk as Earl Marshal and Garter King of Arms. Signed by Sir Albert Woods GCVO, KCB, KCMG, KGStJ, FSA, Garter (in office 1869-1904, d. 1904) and Robert Laurie Clarenceux (in office 1859-1882, d. 1882), two seals, 66 x 53.4cm, framed The grantee, T. S. Owden, DL, who latterly lived at Mulgrave House, Sutton, Surrey, was born in 1808, youngest son of John Owden of Cuckfield, Sussex; his mother, Ann, was daughter of Thomas Scambler. A businessman, he married in 1837 Frances Mary, daughter of John Rigby and had two sons and three daughters. He was elected Alderman and in 1870 Sheriff of London, becoming Lord Mayor and Knighted in 1878. He died in 1889. Read more
