A hand scrivened and illuminated vellum grant of arms dated 30th May 1829, to William Pollett Brown Chatteris of Brazenose College, Oxford. Arms of ... the grantee top left, with those of the Sovereign (with Hanover in Pretence), the Duke of Norfolk as Earl Marshal and Garter King of Arms. Signed by Sir George Nayler, Garter (served as Garter King of Arms 1822-1831, died 1831) and Ralph Bigland, Clarenceux, who held that office 1822-1831 died1 838, 62.3 x 49.5cm W. P. B. Chatteris, JP DL (1810-1889) was the son of a London banker and at the time of the grant was a student of Brasenose. He later acquired the lease of Sandleford Priory Berkshire from 5th Lord Rokeby in 1835. Chatteris had married, two years earlier, Anne eldest daughter of Alexander Arbuthnot, Bishop of Killaloe. She died in 1847, and a few years later he took as his second wife Emily Georgina daughter of Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, Bt., GCB. He died in January 1889 when, under his will, the estate passed to his nephew Alpin MacGregor, youngest son of Sir John Atholl MacGregor, Bt., and Mary Charlotte his wife, sister of the second Mrs. Chatteris.
