A HIGHLY IMPORTANT SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND NECKLACE, VAN CLEEF & ARPELS The front set with seven graduated rectangular-cut sapphires weighing approximately 12.48, 12.39, 7.93, 7.01, 5.89, 5.77 and 5.48 cts., each within a circular-cut diamond two-tiered frame, spaced by circular-cut diamonds, joined to a graduated circular-cut diamond two-row back chain, with marquise-cut diamond two-stone accents, mounted in platinum, with French hallmarks (may be worn as two bracelet) in a suede pouch--15 ins. long Signed by Van Cleef & Arpels, No. N.Y. 28203 With certificate CS 31403 from the American Gemological Laboratories stating that although the 12.48 ct. sapphire exhibits certain visual and internal characteristics associated with Burma (Myanmar), the Laboratory cannot definitely substantiate country of origin. Heat Enhancement: None. All information is subject to the limitations imposed by the mounting. The 1950s was a time of affluence in America. Gone were the deprivations imposed by the war, to be replaced by a period of prosperity when large segments of the population enjoyed the benefits of wealth. It was a time of glamour, when famous movie stars wore elegant jewels on and off the screen. It was also a time of elegance when the wedding of Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier III of Monaco on April 19, 1956 captivated the world. Jewelry of the 50's evolved from the bold look of the previous decade into sumptuous diamond creations. Heavy gold mountings were superseded by white gold and platinum fashioned into flexible wire settings that emphasized the gemstones. This necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels epitomizes this time of luxuriousness. Seven clusters are set with high quality sapphires surrounded by double rows of diamonds. The necklace can also separate to make two bracelets: one formed by the sapphire and diamond clusters; the other, by the double row of graduated diamonds that make up the back chain of the necklace. For a similarly styled necklace, see Sylvie Raulet, "Van Cleef & Arpels", New York, 1987, page 79.
